Bengaluru: BBMP to allow only one dog per flat

Pets, especially dogs, in flats have been a bone of contention between flat owners, building associations, and pet owners in many cities. Now, the BBMP in Bengaluru has put forward a proposal that will allow pet owners to have rent flats but also regulate the dog population in the city,

A leading daily states that Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is now working on a one dog per flat and three dogs per house rule. The BBMP feels that this will regulate the number of dogs in the city and also allow pet owners to have a dog in apartments. The BBMP has apparently sent a draft proposal to he urban development department. The proposal is titled  "Modified by-laws relating to pet dog licensing" adds the report. The section related to allowing dogs in flats reads: "One dog can be reared in flats and it is better if it is an approved breed... However, in an independent dwelling house not more than three dogs are permitted...."

The daily quoted official sources as saying that this was a strategy to regulate dog population in the city. All dog owners will also have to get a license from the BBMP's veterinary officer by paying Rs 250. This will need to be renewed every year. Pet owners will also have to allow the BBMP's vet or government officers to inspect the premises as and when they need. 

The daily reports that there are around two lakh pet dogs in the city. The officials also see the proposal as a way of stopping the lucrative pet-breeding business in the city.
